Painted steel sculpture
David Gerstein
David Gerstein was born in Jerusalem in 1944. He studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and later spent a formative period in New York.
After years of painting, drawing and watercolour, he found his signature language in hand-painted, laser-cut metal assembled in layers. Cyclists, dancers, couples, butterflies and city avenues become cut-out silhouettes in bright, flat colour that seem to move as the viewer walks past.
His work ranges from intimate wall pieces to monumental public installations, with large-scale urban projects in Singapore and exhibitions across Israel, Asia, Europe and the United States.
